HEALTH SAVINGS ACCOUNTS, LONG-TERM CARE, NURSING HOMES,
AND OTHER HEALTH PLANNING ISSUES

The purpose of this course is to discuss the health issues and planning concerns of people in the “RED Zone,” that age when the years of dreams about peaceful and enjoyable retirement “somewhere over the rainbow” become the often fearful realities of dealing with the here and now (or almost here and now).

Major topics include:

  • The elder health care crisis;
  • The tools and techniques for handling decision-making and managing one’s affairs in the event of incapacity;
  • The features, rules, and tax treatment of health savings accounts;
  • The general eligibility, enrollment, and coverage rules as well as costs for Medicare Parts A (hospital), B (medical and doctor services), and D (prescription drugs);
  • The features of long-term care insurance policies and the criteria to evaluate in selecting policies;
  • The use of single-premium life/long-term care policies to solve two problems with one tool; and
  • The criteria for choosing a nursing home or insuring for nursing-home care.
