RETIREMENT MONEY MANAGEMENT 2 -- BUILDING THE NEST EGG

This course is the second in a series of three interrelated 2-hour courses. (The first course is entitled Retirement Money Management 1 -- Process and Concepts and the third is entitled Retirement Money Management 3 -- Making It Last.) Although each of these courses may stand alone, students who are considering taking each of these courses are encouraged to take them in order – 1, 2, then 3 – but it is not absolutely necessary.

This course explains the theory and practice of investing to reach one’s retirement accumulation objectives, that is, to build the retirement nest egg. Although there are many possible ways to achieve wealth, most people accumulate wealth the old-fashioned way, a little bit at a time through regular and wise investment of relatively small amounts that eventually grow to sizable sums. Although this course cannot cover all aspects of investing, it will introduce some of the key concepts all advisers should know to give their clients the guidance they need to secure their financial independence.

Major topics include:

  • Providing benchmarks for rate-of-return assumptions and guidance as to the probabilities of earning various levels of returns over various investment horizons;
  • Understanding the relationship between risk, return, and the investment horizon;
  • Properly accounting for the effects of inflation and taxation on investment returns and wealth accumulation; and
  • Understanding and applying the theory and practice of asset allocation and modern portfolio theory.
